Idiom adalah kumpulan kata atau frase yang tidak bisa diartikan secara harafiah. Setiap bahasa pasti mempunyai idiom. Contoh idiom dalam bahasa Indonesia antara lain : jago merah berarti api, kambing hitam berarti yang dipersalahkan dan lain sebagainya.

Demikian pula halnya dalam bahasa Inggris, juga mempunyai banyak idiom. Tanpa memahami idiom dengan baik seringkali seseorang mempunyai kesalah pahaman terhadap suatu frase kata idiom. Contoh idiom dalam bahasa inggris antara lain : bird brainberarti bodoh, kick the bucket berarti meninggal, A1 berarti sangat bagus dan lain sebagainya.
